Ali Nelson. Perhaps it’s her free spirited traveling gypsy ways that make her so effortlessly likable. Or her staggering talent as a hand-letterer. Or the fact that she’s a self proclaimed craft cocktail connoisseur. Whatever it is, with over 33K followers on Instagram, it’s pretty clear that it’s working. In addition to countless wedding invitations, and graphics for major apparel brands, Ali is the talented artist behind the hand-lettered graphics on our website. She took a break from her constant stream of bright, black pour-overs and pen and ink sketching to tell us a bit more about herself.
Are you an early bird or a night owl?
NIGHT! even if i get up early, it feels like my brain, energy, and creativity doesn’t kick in until the afternoon.
Choice breakfast food?
Not a huge breakfast person, but my mom’s homemade granola with vanilla greek yogurt and a cup of coffee will always do the trick!
What's one thing you do every day?
I’m really terrible with routine. It’s something i’m working on… besides that? probably brush my teeth.
Favorite color & why?
I vary so much, but for now I’m in a white phase.
Secret travel destination?
One of the most magical weekends I’ve had was a spontaneous Labor Day trip to Rosemary Beach in Florida. A couple girlfriends and I traveled to the area sight-unseen, on a recommendation. The town is ridiculously cute, the weather was perfect, the water was turquoise and warm, there was a live outdoor concert, and the best fireworks show ever. It was a perfect getaway. You should all go… but don’t tell anyone else!
Keystone fashion accessory in your life?
Headbands and apparel that resemble blankets. I love and can’t resist them. Although every once in a while I walk into a party feeling like Charlie’s not-Marnie-girlfriend from GIRLS.
Underrated or up-and-coming musician you love?
I don’t know that they’re underrated or up-and-coming, but lately i’ve been loving Colony House and Leagues.
If you are ever stuck in a rut, how do you get the creative juices flowing again?
I go for a drive, explore some unfamiliar part of town, turn up the music and seat warmers, roll down the windows and just cruise.
Before you leave us, what's one piece of advice you'd like to share with aspiring designers?
Make things! Let yourself FEEL whats inside of you, and make things out of that place. Disregard what you think you should be making or how you feel like you should be doing it. Be authentic, there’s not enough authenticity out there and I truly believe that unexpected beauty comes out of that place.
